The Arrival
Abuja, Nigeria — His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has arrived in the Federal Republic of Nigeria to participate in the latest Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
Upon arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, the President was formally received by His Excellency Dr. Julius Fofanah Sandy, Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to Nigeria and Permanent Representative to ECOWAS. The reception highlighted the seamless coordination between Freetown and the Abuja Mission as Sierra Leone continues to play a pivotal role in West African governance.
High-Level Agenda
As the current Chair of the ECOWAS Authority, President Bio’s visit is centered on steering the sub-region through critical transitions. Key focus areas for this summit include:
Regional Security: Addressing the security architecture in the Sahel and coastal West Africa.
Economic Integration: Progressing the roadmap for the “Eco” single currency (target 2027) and the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS).
Democratic Stability: Mediating constitutional transitions and reinforcing the “Zero Tolerance” policy on unconstitutional changes of government.
The Role of the High Commission
Under the leadership of Dr. Sandy, the Sierra Leone High Commission in Abuja has been instrumental in preparing the technical groundwork for this visit. Dr. Sandy’s recent chairmanship of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) ensured that Sierra Leone’s strategic priorities—including public debt management and regional infrastructure—are at the forefront of the Heads of State agenda.
